We had a terrific tour about Myanmar this January, visited several places and lived in 6 hotels, and I should say Thande Hotel Bagan is probably one of the best. We have fallen in love with it immediately and wished we spent more time there. It is very quiet and charming, very cozy and well-kept. A special word is about our room (#3001)! We didn't imagine it would be so nice. Two rooms, one of which is large, but very cozy bedroom with rocking-chair at the window looking tods Aerrawadi. There were two bathrooms (big and huge). It was a great pleasure to stay at that room.
The restaurant was another thing that pleased us. Our cheers to its staff who suggested us extremely tasty dishes (grilled fish especially) suitable for gentle european stomachs. Besides they were always very helpful , polite, friendly and warm-hearted. We were extremely surprised to read a review about "useless staff", we can't believe it.
Probabbly the only weak point of the hotel is SPA. In fact it;s not spa-center, it's a massage center. We tried Thai and Myanmar massage, both were painful during and after massage procedure.
On the whole we enjoyed our stay at Thande and recollect it with warmly.

Ask for a room in the row of duplex cottages directly facing the river - great views of life on the Irrawaddy River. The restaurant is wonderful, outside on the grass under huge shady acacia trees. Great service and an excellent location for visiting the sights of Bagan.

For ME, I was a bit disappointed: I'd stayed here in 1996, and was looking forward to a bit of nostalgia. Unfortunately, the hotel has been completely done over, or else my memory is very faulty (granted, this time, I did "upgrade" to a "river view" room).
But, for YOU, it will be a very COMFORTABLE experience. Rooms are nice, king (or at least queen) bed, A/C works fine. They are well kept up, and have a, if not exactly plush, above the norm feel to them. If you're looking for REAL luxury, stay elsewhere, but the value for money is great.
As stated, no shower curtain; bathroom did have a tub; separate shower "area" (shower head in wall). Convenient for when you return all HOT, to just step under. Single sink, but not a problem.
Small porch, with bench seat, overlooking outdoor restaurant, with river beyond (just qualified for the 'river view' designation). If river important, I'd go for the riverSIDE rooms.
Food in outdoor restaurant just fine, reasonably priced. Beer cold, staff very friendly. Very nice to sit out and have a meal after a day of bike riding. Bike rental is just outside the hotel grounds; horse carts also available there.
Internet did work, if slow. Be advised that not all e-mail sites are accessible from Myanmar; g-mail IS accessible.
Staff very helpful in confirming bookings, arranging taxi, and general service. Very friendly.
Staying here gains you a central location for touring the ruins, saving you from having to "travel in" from villages further away. In the heat, that can help. Plus allows you to stay out later - shorter distance "home" from the sunset views.

One can only have praise for a hotel that goes out of its way to ensure that travellers arriving in such a out-of-the-way place are made welcome with excellent facilities, friendly staff and a great location. We had a river view room and it was inspirational.
The location is perfect for the many outings one does to so many interesting sites.
The outdoor eating area has good food and great views sitting under some amazingly large Acacia trees with squirrels and resident owl.

This hotel, though not the fanciest in Bagan, is without a doubt the best. Its location can't be beat. The outdoor-dining room staff is as helpful as can be. There is always something going on along or on the river and often an exotic bird in the trees overhead. The pagodas and other monuments that are the pride and joy of the people of Bagan are amazing, and the market in the town down the road is the best in the country for antiques and other items.

I can only second all the excellent reviews that have been posted here. The hotel is great, it has a superb location, both close to the pagodas in the Old Bagan, and enjoying splendid sunset views on the Irrawaddy River. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed, each with a private terrace. I strongly urge you to take a deluxe room which is furbished with teak wood panel rather than simple plastic (as in superior rooms). Those overlooking the river (2.001-2.015) are more secluded and private than others.

Excellent! I work in the resort business and know the 4-diamond criteria. Thande Bagan could be a 4-diamond resort! The rooms, especially those that overlook the river, were excellent, clean and well appointed. What stood out most was the service! I had a bout of food poisoning (caught before I got to Bagan) and the staff was so kind and attentive. The entire staff, from the doorman to the groundskeepers to the housekeepers knew the meaning of service. Kudos particularly to Tun Tun from the front desk! They also did an excellent job setting up a driver and guide to see the pagodas.
