Situated in Old Bagan about a half hour journey from the airport this hotel is ideal for those who have come to view the religious sites, and there are plenty of those!
Rooms are adequately equipped, well situated and of good size. Food is well presented and of good quality. Breakfast is served by the pool area and is substantial. Service at all levels very good. Pool area clean and well tended, towels and sunbeds free of charge. Reception area, spacious and comfortable.House keeping did a great job , turn down each night with flowers decorating the bed, room was kept spotless.Happy hour 4pm -6pm.This is a very nice hotel and we enjoyed our stay.
The heat in March is oppressive so it's best to have early starts which enables you to rest in the afternoon during the hottest hours, then resume late afternoon if need be.

What a lovely hotel. Not being on the river I was a little worried we would be in a so so place, but it turned out to be a real oasis.
The highlights of this hotel include the pool area which is really well set up and comfortable with a full time pool attendant and the bar only a few paces from the sun lounges. There is plenty of shade for those hot times and the ability to find the sun when you want to catch up on the tan
The rooms are also great - you have your own little "back yard" with a couple of sun lounges if you really dont want to go to the pool area. The layout of the rooms is comfortable and the turn down service had my wife in raptures as the bed was twice a day beautifully decorated with flowers.
The food at the resteraunt was some of the best we found in Myanmar
The service by staff was fantastic, all were very friendly and could not provide too much help.

All up I would recommend this hotel to everyone as one of the best hotels we experienced in Myanmar (and better than many in far more prosperous countries)

We spent 4 nights at Tharabar Gate, a quiet and stylish hotel close to the historic center. The staff was friendly, attentive and the food was great. They even had some swiss dishes on the Menu! We enjoyed the pool and our spacious and quiet room with AC.
We would definitely come back!

Has the layout of a beach hotel in that is it single storey buildings of bungalow style spread throughout large grounds with a large pool and sunbeds in the centre. Yet out of the hotel instead of a beach you have the tremendous sights of Bagan. Rooms are good size with all you would expect of a clean efficient hotel, mini bar fridge, TV ( not much in English but you’d be a sad person if that’s what you need) safe and a small private garden area with your own sunbeds. If you want relief from the sun area for a couple of hours in the hottest part of the day the pool is a welcome relief. Pool towels are provided, drinks at poolside etc all done with a quiet efficiency. Breakfast meals are plentiful and varied, buffet arrangement with egg bar for omelettes etc. The hotel is not exceptionally expensive for evening meals but if you want to eat elsewhere there are two places immediately outside the hotel. Tharabar ( or Sarabar ) 1 and 2. 2 is nearest the hotel and looks more expensive. It is and its not very good food. 1 is just 10 metres further on is much more basic in décor but is cheap with very good food. This really is a very comfortable modern place to stay with excellent staff. In fact the whole of our stay in Myanmar was first class and throughout the country the people deserve our patronage because they are quite simply warm and very friendly.

We arrived after a dusty 15 minute cab ride from the airport. The hotel was an oasis of calm and luxury after the suspension-less, vintage Toyota. Large pool and the restaurant table are set around it. The staff are charming and the concierge really helpful in finding the best places to take photographs at sunrise and sunset.
The room was huge with powerful air conditioning and ours (Room 505) had a small outdoor garden which was lovely. The food is great but the menu is fairly small. The waiters are so friendly.
The bar, also by the pool, offers a happy hour promotion which is welcome after you've been climbing Stupas all day.
Hotel taxis are insanely expensive ($17 for a 12 minute run to the airport). Local transport is horse and cart which is both romantic and very cheap. Available just outside the hotel driveway.
All in all, an unexpected gem of a hotel.

We spent two nights at this hotel in the middle of January. This was in the middle of the Ananda Festival (an annual festival usually falling within January) when many devotees come from far and wide to camp in the Temple's vicinity, ply their goods, set up temporary stalls for food and produce and make offerings. Chanting by the Buddhist monks in the Ananda Temple goes on day and night during this period (which lasts for about 3 weeks). The hotel is located very near the Ananda Temple.
Thus, we were accompanied by the chanting the whole time we were in the hotel. That said, since it was fairly cool and we had the windows closed, the chanting was muted. The rooms at this hotel are spread throughout in their fairly big grounds and I am not sure whether the rooms at the far back would be less affected during this 3 week period.
The hotel itself is beautiful and set out like a resort. The room we had was big with a king-sized bed, although the TV was a bit small for the room size (but adequate nonetheless). Satellite TV with many channels. Free bottled water was provided and closet space was sufficient for the two of us. There was an in-room safe, mini fridge and telephone. A small garden seating area was in front of the room, with sun-lounges.
A decent buffet spread was laid out for breakfast early in the morning (starting at 6am). Eggs and pancakes cooked to order, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, fried noodles, fried rice, breads and rolls, fruit and a selection of cheeses were amongst the types of food on offer. There was also a selection of fruit juices, tea and coffee.
The hotel had a good chef whilst we were there. We dined there on the first evening we stayed and liked it so much we returned for dinner again the next night (which did not disappoint either). The food was, in our view, better than similar food served in the restaurant at the Sakura Hotel.
During our stay, and whist eating in the restaurant, we did not see mosquitoes or flies, it may be because the weather was cooler in January.
Based on our 2 night experience, I would definitely recommend this hotel. It has charm, good service and is in a wonderful location. The Ananda Temple is definitely worth visiting and Old Bagan is a wonderful place to set as a base during a holiday in Bagan.
