Silver Beach Hotel

The Silver Beach Hotel is an excellent choice for a hotel at Ngapali Beach. It’s at the north end of the long, gorgeous, sandy beach. We think it’s the best choice there for an excellent price and terrific views. The rooms are duplex cottages set out in two horse-shoe shapes so that every room has a view of the beach and ocean. The cottages have decks so you can sit outside and enjoy the lovely views. The duplex rooms are designed so that the common wall is the bathroom wall, and we found them quite sound proof from our neighbors. The windows and door have screens so you can enjoy fresh air and breezes. We rarely used our AC. There are expensive “suites” that are newer buildings and sit directly along the beach, but we prefer the duplex cottages. The suites have larger bedrooms and bathrooms, but the rest of the inside space is pretty useless. The windows don’t open and there are no screened windows or doors, so you can’t enjoy the fresh air.

The cottage bathrooms are small, but well designed with a tub and shower combination. The shower water does NOT leak all over the floor. The rooms are cleaned well each day by a cheerful staff. There is a small fridge in the room and the prices of the drinks are very fair – not ridiculously high like at some hotels. There is a small TV with a reasonable selection of channels. The lighting is good enough so you can read at night while you’re in bed. Each room has bamboo rods outside to hang wet items to dry – a thoughtful idea. There is no swimming pool, just a fabulous blue ocean that is crystal clear for swimming. No need for a pool when you have the ocean for your pool. The sheltered bay has few waves, especially at this end of the beach. The beach is kept spotlessly clean. The sand is soft, with no stones at this end of the beach. The hotel has chaise lounges and palapas on the beach. The hotel provides fresh beach towels daily.

The restaurant is right on the beach with beautiful views of the ocean. The buffet breakfasts had a good selection of food and a fresh egg station. The food was good and the service was attentive. The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful with plane confirmations and information about the local villages. There is a computer available in the lobby for internet at a cost of about $3 / hour. It’s as reliable as internet can be in Myanmar. There is a small book exchange / library in the lobby, but most of the books are in German. You can rent a bike (50 cents for an hour) at the restaurant across the street from the hotel and ride into LinThar village to the Andrew Clark Library (about 5 minute ride). The Library has a large selection of English books. It’s open from 8:00 – 11:00 and 13:00 – 16:00. You might also want to check out the Vera Thompson School that teaches English to the village children – it will steal your heart.

Silver Beach Ngapali is a nice small hotel with bungalow-rooms. The more expensive ones (still not expensive at all when compared to the upmarket hotels at this same beach) face the sea and cheaper ones are located in the gardens. We stayed at a garden bugalow and it was surprisingly good. Every bungalow comes with their own terrace and the rooms are modern and clean with wooden floors. The location of this hotel is good since it is the first one in a long row of hotels on the beach (coming from the airport direction). You wouldn't want to be stuck in the middle where all the tourists are stuck together. So, on the one side of the hotel there is nothing but a small fisherman village and on the other side, another small bungalow-type hotel. Also this part of the beach seemed to be free from the ocean winds at least at this time of the year (February). We enjoyed immensely slow walks on the quiet beach as well as the great little massage parlour located right on the beach. There is nothing more relaxing after a day of walking than to have a foot massage and look at the red sun sinking down to the sea, listen to the waves and to feel the cool breeze in your face and hair. This parlour also organises fishing trips and boating. We hired our own wooden fisherman boat and had a great time fishing and snorkeling in nearby islands. The hotel restaurant is located on the beach under palm trees and lit with candles. The food was superb. Best in Burma, definately. Seafood is of course as fresh as it can be and all the dishes that we tried, were absolutely delicious. After a big dinner, it is nice to know that you can go to your own nice bungalow and leave your window open (there are mosquito nets in the windows) so that you can hear the waves and fall to sleep...
