If you're passing through Mandalay, do yourself a favor and stay at the Red Canal Hotel. The rooms are not large, but they are beautifully decorated and maintained; as you pass through the reception area, the personnel stand and greet you by name, at the included breakfast, the chef will prepare anything that he is capable serving you.
The hotel exemplifies what service used to be: gracious, courteous, rendered by people who are pleased to be working and pleasing you.

Excellent hotel within a cultivated location. Rooms are very good. Surrounding is needs getting used if you look with traditional European eyes. What you can see is natural life in Myanmar. Get familiar with it. It is worthwile.
Service was outstanding. Rarely we experienced such an amibility. We have been there for two short stopover. After our first stay we have been looking forward coming back to this nice place.

Charming, small boutique hotel with beautifully decorated rooms with private bath. Complimentary evening cocktail party each night we were there. Ground floor rooms also had a small enclosed patio with outdoor shower and fountain garden. Located near the palace area. Good breakfasts.

We couldn't fault the reception, the decor and the friendly attentive staff. Or the cocktail party with endless free cocktails each night (apparently there is one if the hotel is full). Just one or two gripes. The room we had booked was described as a "suite", but it wasn't - it was quite a small room; my husband had to climb over me to get into bed! The laundry charges are horrendous. The staff sometimes try too hard, such as reprogramming our laptop without us asking! But we loved it and would stay there again.

We stayed at the Red Canal in Mandalay for 2 nights in Dec 09. This is a small hotel but a very nice one. The location does not lend itself to a stroll on foot at night but if, like most tourists, you get to the hotel tired after a long day, you will not mind staying and enjoying the evening in the hotel.

The restaurant has a relatively large selection of dishes, with predominance of Indian food, so you should find something for you (unless you expect high end cuisine)!

Our room was large with a well appointed bathroom. It was very clean. Internet is available which is not so frequent in Nyanmar!

The staff is very friendly and helpful.

An address to recommend

This is a great hotel. Very clean, staff are outstanding, efficient, friendly, and very helpful, great IT. The Indian food is outstanding. The staff can arrange excellent day trips and taxis. We were travelling with a group ranging from age 14 to 71 and everyone enjoyed it. We would definitely stay there again if going to Mandalay.

Excellent option.
Situated in quiet neighbourhood, easy access to places, transport easy to find to get around.
Amazing place to come back to and be able to totally relax after a day of activity.
Staff friendly and plenty of accurate and useful information.
Very highly recommended.
Stayed 5 nights and very satisfied.

My father always said that you know when you are dealing with the owner of a company, and not just an employee, because the level of service is always perceptively higher...the kind of attention that money can't buy.

Well...either my Dad was wrong in this case or the waiters (and the housekeepers and the front-desk staff and Nilar in the business center and...) all own this high-class boutique hotel because I always felt that I was dealing with the owner of the hotel and not ever with an employee.

The welcome is genuine. The smiles real. The "Can I help you?" and "How was your night?" were real questions, not formulas read off cue cards.

The service was perceptively higher than even this addicted-lover of 5-star hotels worldwide has come to expect.

The rooms are character-filled and not a rubber stamp room of even the best hotel chains. The Red Canal is really an oasis of quiet in the middle of Myanmar's second largest city.

The attention to detail and the genuine warmth of the staff is something that money simply cannot buy.

Well...actually it can...and (incredibly) at a cost of only about $100 a night.

My wife and I enjoyed Hotel By The Red Canal for a two night stay while touring the sites of Mandalay. The Chin Suite was compact and nice and featured a small patio with a bubbling waterfall directly in front. The staff were warm and inviting and the Indian restaurant had an intriguing menu that offered a number of good vegetarian options.

One of the few locations we experienced with good internet connections, including in-room wireless.

his hotel turned out to be an inspired choice. It is away from the rather shabby downtown area where most hotels are. On the map it looks close to the Royal Moat, but in Mandalay's heat, even that is a longish hike. Given that you will need a vehicle to see the sights of Mandalay, Hotel By the Red Canal is a miracle of design on a residential lot.
While the rooms are not that large, they are tastefully set out in teak with the latest in conveniences (mini-fridge, sat TV, tea making facils etc.). The few yards walk across the gurgling stream to the dining room, give a sense of space, and the little pool is cunningly enclosed with tropical foliage to hide the fact it is nearly on the street. The food in the restaurant is good enough not to need to traipse out to a restaurant. The breakfast buffet is good, but I missed my muesli. It should not be hard to add quick oats, raisins and nuts to what is already there. A custom omelette is done quickly in the kitchen.
However it is the graciousness and hospitality of all the staff, starting with Gloria, Hostess Relations Manager, that makes a stay so memorable. We were there for 3 days, and the free computer service upstairs in the loft, aided by an expert engineer to get around the vagaries of Hotmail and Yahoo being blocked, was a valued treat.
