Mandalay City Hotel

Three Star

This hotel is modern, with good A/C and hot water, built in the middle of a downtown block which was once occupied by a bus station. Our room was large, with good beds, nice tub and shower, and a small "minibar" that would chill the diet cokes we purchased on the street. Its complimentary breakfast -- buffet with prepared omelets or other eggs -- was also good.

Downtown Mandalay is not a tourist mecca, but then if doing our trip again I would not go to Mandalay (for other reasons). However, this hotel is a good base to sample local cuisine that is reachable on foot.

The hotel is set back from a main road in the city centre. It's modern and clean though our L shaped room would have benefitted from a lick of paint as there were a few marks on the Walls. The rooms all have wood floors and ours had a carved wood statue which was a nice touch. They seem to have some problems with the air con as ours kept cutting out and only went to a minimum of 18 degrees which felt quite warm in the mandalay heat. There was a similar situation in the breakfast room which tended to feel quite warm. Breakfast was buffet style and was quite good. The staff were helpful and friendly and most spoke basic English. Mandalay is a big city so it's necessary to use the little blue pick up truck taxis to get about. There's usually one parked by the gates and the guy who was there regularly was friendly and spoke good English. In summary, no real complaints on what would be classed as a decent 3 star hotel in Europe.

Very nice hotel in the centre of Mandalay. Good size rooms and nicely decorated. Small swimmingpool. Good breakfast.

This hotel is an oasis in a big, dusty and poor city. You enter through a large walled gate into a compound of green gardens and trees. The noise of the city immediately disappears.

The rooms are fairly spacious and have parquet wood floors. They are not unlike $250 plus a night hotel rooms in Paris. They are clean and well maintained. Great water pressure in the shower and they have shower curtains in the bathtubs.

The staff was very fluent in English and extremely helpful whnever we had a question.

The food in their restaurant was excellent. A nice selection of Burman, Thai and western dishes. Our Burmese friends ordered Pizza and club sandwiches which were both huge.

The hotel is in a good location on 26 street which is a main route through town.
