The Rawan Trail - 4 Days

The Rawan Trail (Soft Adventure Trekking)
Sample Itinerary - actual may vary.

Tue - Day 01.  Arrival in Putao.

Upon arrival at Putao airport in the remote far-north of Myanmar, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your guest house. Putao lies in a flat valley and is the jumping-off point for trekkers who want to explore the region’s deep forests, villages, wildlife sanctuaries and snow-capped mountains. After a brief freshen-up we shall take an orientation walk in and around Putao. We shall have our dinner and overnight at the guesthouse.

Wed - Day 02.  Putao - Htawadum – Namkham. (jeep/trek)

Following breakfast we visit attractive Putao market, often busy with local ethnic tribes. We then depart by jeep or truck through the vast Putao plain on a gravel road to Htawadum, a distance of 14 km – an hour’s ride. Here we cross the Malikha river by long-tailed boat to visit the famous Kanugmulon Pagoda, said to be one of 84,000 pagodas built by the great king Thiri Dhamma Thawka. From here we proceed by foot toward Salundum and turn toward Nampandum at Lona suspension bridge. From here we continue to walk to Namkham, a distance of 5 km which should take us about 3 hours, passing the through the small village of Htrandum en route. Namkham, a large Rawan village, is situated at the foot of the Namhti mountain range, an area with a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Named after Hkamti Shan, meaning ‘Golden River’, this area has become a fruit cultivation centre. We settle in at our guesthouse and explore the village. We shall have our dinner and overnight at a local guest house.

Thu - Day 03.  Namkham - Machanbaw - Mulashidi – Putao. (trek/jeep)

After breakfast we start the walk to Machanbaw, a distance of 15 km which should take us about 6 hours through relatively lowland terrain with occasional ups and downs. Along the way we pass through some smaller villages such as Inwaingbaw and Inbubaw. Machanbaw is a small, colonial-style administrative town. We shall visit ‘stone dragon’ park which should take about 20 minute to walk, and then cross the suspension bridge that spans the Malikha river to Naungkhine, where our jeep awaits us. From here we head to Mulashidi Lisu village, a distance of 35 km which should take us about one hour. We visit this attractive Lisu settlement and its suspension bridge across the Mula river. From here we can enjoy the beautiful backdrop of mountains, often snow-capped in winter. We return to Putao late afternoon and check in at our guesthouse where we stay for dinner.

Fri - Day 04.  Departure

Enjoy your last breakfast in the far-north at the guesthouse. After breakfast there may be time to visit the market for some last-minute shopping and photography. Should time permit, you will visit one of the local villages where you can interact with the local people and observe a traditional Rawan or Lisu dance performance. Your northern adventure ends with a transfer to the airport and your onward flight to Mandalay, Yangon or Myitkyina.
